Functional group are those who gather or come together to work together for some purpose. The most influential of all groups in organization is the primary functional group. An example is the family. Other functional groups arise with varying degrees of permanency properties.

The crowd for example, may be a group only for a few minutes. Football team may be the group for one season. The working group may simply represent the group during the course of a job. Study group or worshiping churches is probably the group for several years. However, its members have many or few contacts outside of formal meetings.

How formal functional groups into the mass communication? Among others through organizations such as the communications staff of newspapers, publishing, radio, film or television staff. These are functional groups. Noting the above description. it is clear that the functional group is a group that usually have the same opinion about something. 

This is caused by the existence of norms and the same size in the group. There are a lot of literature about the communication process in groups, where such communications can cause attitude change.
